At Forest Family Dentistry, we take every possible measure to make our patients feel relaxed. Dr. Jonathan Yu understands, however, that patients of all ages can sometimes feel anxious about undergoing dental treatments. Because we care deeply about helping each and every patient to have a pleasant visit, we are proud to offer oral conscious sedation dentistry at our San Jose, California office. This safe, effective treatment will calm you to the point of “twilight sleep”; that is, you will still be able to respond to commands, but you will not be asleep or unconscious. Most importantly, you will be calm throughout treatment, and will regain full consciousness shortly after your treatment, feeling like you just finished a light nap on a long airplane ride. Don’t allow feelings of anxiety to keep you from pursuing the treatment you need. Contact us today to learn how sedation dentistry at our San Jose office can help you achieve and maintain a beautiful, healthy smile in the utmost comfort.

Preparing for Oral Conscious Sedation

One of the most important parts of undergoing a successful oral conscious sedation is to enlist the help of a spouse, relative or close friend who can drive you to your appointment and back home again. This person should also be strong enough to assist you in returning to your car, and helping you into your home following the drive. You will likely remain groggy for a while following treatment, and you should plan on spending the remainder of your day lying down at home. As such, make sure you have your bed or couch prepared for your return home, as well as some movies or reading material.

The Sedation Process

You will be given a sedative pill such as Halcion, which you will take about an hour before your appointment to begin the relaxation process. Depending upon how well the first pill has helped you to achieve calmness and relaxation, you may be given a second pill. Everyone’s metabolism is different, so it may take as little as 20 minutes or up to two hours for the drug to take effect. Dr. Yu will monitor your heart rate and breathing throughout treatment. Once your treatment is complete, you may still be deeply sedated, which is why it is so important to have a kind friend assist you in
